Garden Plant Lists

The linked lists of garden plants suitable for use in Bathurst, Mudgee, Oberon, Orange and Wellington gardens were developed from information provided by members.  These may be useful if you have an Australian plants garden.

Historical Record

In 2015, during Bathurst's bicentenary of European settlement, Merle Thompson produced the excellent paper:  Native Flora of the Bathurst Region: a Historical Perspective.

Newsletter Archive

The Central West Group produced regular newsletters following the first meeting in 1995 until 2016.  Access to archived newsletters is available here. 

The CW Committee is keen to re-introduce newsletters in 2018.  If you are a member of the CW Group and might be interested in volunteering as Newsletter Editor, the Committee would love to hear from you. Help with creating a template, either in Microsoft Word or Publisher, would be available. 

Plant Nurseries

There are community Australian plants nurseries run by volunteers in Bathurst, Grenfell and Lithgow.  The Bathurst Community Nursery grows plants primarily for revegetation and restoration projects and can be contacted through Central Tablelands Landcare. 

The Grenfell Community Native Nursery (0456 879 481, 45 East Street, Grenfell) and the Lithgow & District Community Nursery (63531126, 2A Coalbrook Street, Lithgow) also cater for these projects, focussing on indigenous plants, as well as having plants available for retail to the general public.  Their opening hours are restricted so check before visiting.

Most commercial garden centres stock some Australian plants, but specialist retail Australian plants nurseries in the region are few.  The Blue Wren Bush Farm nursery at Wattle Flat near Bathurst specialises in local plants as well as other Australian plants, and sells at the Bathurst Farmers Markets once a month.  The Dubbo Forest Nursery on the Wellington Road also focusses on Australian plants and opens every day.  Bilby Blooms is further afield at Binnaway and sells at various markets to the north of the area.

Burrendong Botanic Garden and Arboretum

Burrendong Botanic Garden and Arboretum was established in 1964 on about 167 hectares near Wellington, and is dedicated to the preservation of Australia's diverse flora.  Volunteers maintain display gardens and propagate plants for use in BBGA as well as for sale to the public.  The Friends of Burrendong Arboretum frequently post photos and information on their Facebook page.  A visit to BBGA is both fascinating and inspiring.
