History

In 1957 a group of people who "pledged to promote the establishment and breeding of Australian native plants for garden, park and farm" established the Society for Growing Australian Plants in Victoria. By 1958 active regional societies had been established in six states, including NSW, and the ACT. The federal association, the Association of Societies for Growing Australian Plants (ASGAP), was formed in 1962.

For over 50 years, the societies in each state have continued to grow and expand their activities. In the 1980s, the Society for Growing Australian Plants NSW changed its name to the Australian Plants Society NSW. It now has over 1,500 members. Through the accumulated knowledge and widespread interests of its members, the Australian Plants Society NSW has become a leading source of information on many aspects of Australian plants.

The Australian Native Plants Society (Australia), known as ANPSA, is the federal body to which each state society is affiliated, replacing ASGAP.
