groups

The Society's activities are wide ranging and include special interest Study Groups and support for research through the Australian Flora Foundation.

District group members have been responsible for the establishment, development and maintenance of many public gardens and reserves throughout Australia.

Other promotional activities include annual exhibitions of Australian plants where the general public can view examples of the flora from all parts of the continent.

Although the great majority are Australian residents, the Society's members can be found in many other countries including the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Belgium and the United States.

publications

The Society is also involved in the publication of a range of practical and educational books on Australian plants.

Members of the Australian Plants Society receive the Society's main publication, "Australian Plants", which is issued 4 times per year. "Australian Plants" strikes    a balance between articles of practical interest to the average grower and scientific research papers and is Australia wide in it's scope. The journal has built up a high reputation since its first issue in 1959 and is held in many libraries both in Australia and overseas. It's authors include the foremost experts in research into the horticulture and botany of Australian native plants as well as experienced amateur growers. "Australian Plants" is illustrated with numerous colour photographs and line drawings. It is also possible to subscribe to "Australian Plants" independent of Society membership. The cost is $24.00 annually (AUS $36 overseas), including postage).

The Australian Plants Society NSW Newsletter, "Native Plants for New South Wales", is also sent out quarterly and is an interesting mix of articles (from the serious to the tongue-in-cheek). It includes an event diary for NSW oriented events, "Mailbox" for you to have your say, information on upcoming workshops and conferences etc.

Also available is an online publication - "Australian Plants online". This internet publication is also issued quarterly in a magazine format and has feature articles and regular departments (book reviews, interesting internet sites, back issues, etc). The current issue can be viewed here. Please note that the content of "Australian Plants" and "Australian Plants online" is completely different.

The various District and Study Groups also issue regular newsletters which advise members of coming events as well as publishing articles and letters contributed by members.

The Society is also active in book publishing either by itself or in collaboration with commercial publishers. Titles that have been published in recent years include:

  * The Language of Botany by C N Debenham; now a standard reference work in many tertiary courses
* Australian Indigenous Orchids by A W Dockrill; 2 Volumes describing Australia's terrestrial and epiphytic orchids
* Friends and Foes in Your Garden by David Hockings; a comprehensive guide to pest and disease control
* The Cradle of Incense by George Althofer; seeking out and cultivating Prostanthera species
* The Banksia Book by Alex George; every species illustrated in colour and described in detail
* The Grevillea Book Vols 1, 2, and 3 by Peter Olde and Neil Marriott; the definitive work on this third largest of the Australian genera
* Native Plants of the Sydney District: An Identification Guide by Alan Fairley and Philip Moore; photographs and descriptions of the flora of the central New South Wales coast and hinterland

seedbank

Seed is available free to members. The seed list is published annually in the April edition of "Native Plants" with additions and deletions published in other issues. Copies of the full list can be obtained by forwarding a stamped (50c) SAE to the curator - John Randall, 8 Coachmans Place Mardi NSW 2259

PLEASE NOTE the following conditions:

  * Seed free to Members
* Maximum number of seed packets per request is six
* Requests must be accompanied by a stamped self-addressed envelope (90c, 110 X 220 mm)
* Overseas members can send a standard international reply coupon purchased at their own post office, covering the cost of return mail
* Please list seed requests in alphabetical order and include a list of alternative selections

Where colours and specific growth habit are shown against the name of the species, this indicates that the seed came from a parent plant with those features. There is no certainty, however, that the features will be retained by the seedlings from the seed supplied.
Seed donations are welcome and are vital if the seed bank is to remain viable. Please state the source of the seed, whether from natural or cultivated material and the location of the parent plants. PLEASE do not send seed from hybrids.
