Climbers are adapted to either growing up or out across the ground using modified stems and leaves such as tendrils, twining stems, thorns and hooks. Climbers can be used as a ground cover or to decorate garden structures. They are increasingly of interest given declining garden space. They provide:

  • Colour and texture through flower and foliage
  • Privacy and screening
  • As a green wall
  • Habitat
This Hardenbergia violacea, or Happy Wanderer, is happily growing along a pool fence, giving beautiful purple colour each winter.
